In the male urology department, Nurse Liu Yun had witnessed everything—patients claiming they had fish living in their bladders, men ridiculously trying to perform surgeries on themselves out of despair, and some who got a bit overly infatuated with her care. However, the day she came across Huo Shan was beyond all these times.
A Painful Walk to the Hospital
It was a Sunday morning in May 2019 when Liu Yun was going to her work. On the way, she noticed a distressed young couple attempting to walk the street. The tall and handsome young man was sluggish with pain, and his girlfriend was supporting him halfway.
Liu approached them in haste. “I am a nurse at the hospital up the road. Can I assist you?”
The girl, Lin Man, almost sobbing from the stress, stated, “He has been in pain all throughout the night!”
Liu with a wheelchair from the hospital lobby went to Dr. Jin’s office together with Huo Shan. She then returned with some medical supplies and found Huo Shan in the middle of a panic when he was trying to put his trousers back on.
“Don’t panic,” Liu said, laughing at the same time. “It was much worse when I saw it.”
Then Dr. Jin took a sharp breath.
Liu stopped in her tracks. Dr. Jin never takes a sharp breath.
The Tattoo That Started It All
In the examination room, Dr. Jin took a banana, and with a pen, he stabbed it. “Hmmm, kid, let’s pretend this banana is your… equipment.”
Immediately, Huo Shan’s face got incredibly red.
Lin Man also couldn’t help but laugh behind her hand.
Dr. Jin went on, “If it isn’t the case that you infected the needle for the tattoo or used some cheap ink for it, your art wouldn’t be the cause of the problem. You have varicocele—swollen veins in your scrotum. Possibly due to you working at the desk for a long time.”
Huo Shan, a tattoo artist, was really hard at work with the same clients for more than 14 hours straight. But that is not what made the story amazing.
When Liu was prepping him for surgery, she noticed this— a very detailed tattoo of Lin Man’s name, Man, with a blossoming rose that was just at the beginning point of its petals.
“Not a single numbing cream was used,” Huo Shan said proudly.
Liu was confused by the statement. “You must be either the most courageous or the most foolish romantic guy I’ve ever met.”
A Love Stronger Than Money
While teaching Huo Shan’s lessons about life, Lin Man gave a brief history of their past:
Huo Shan was born to a very affluent family. Lin Man was the opposite. His father threw him out of the house for dating a girl lower than his “status”. So at 22, Huo Shan decided to quit everything—no money, no plan, not even a single item of clothing—just to be with her.
They had slept naked in the winter and eaten vermin in the dying months. They even once walked 10 hours through a snowstorm so Lin Man could visit her dying grandmother.
Liu started to tear up. “You guys are like a damn K-drama!”
Lin Man smiled. “Yeah, it was worth it.”
The Unexpected Student
After some time, a hulking, gold chain-wearing bloke called Lao Zhang thundered into the clinic dragging his wife along.
“Why is it that all the nurses are women?!” he said in a low voice.
Liu told him that his prostatitis was so bad that he needed not only pills but massage therapy as well.
Lao Zhang laughed and said, “Do you really want me to believe a hand job is the cure for this?”
Then his wife sunk her teeth into him.
It turned out that she was the victim of brain damage after a deadly gas leak that took their child’s life. Now she was as close to Lao Zhang as a guard dog is to its master.
However, the story has a totally unexpected twist—she actually was a nurse prior to the car crash.
Liu was thinking and asked, “Would you be interested in learning how to treat him by yourself?”
The wife was very nervous but still she tried to follow Liu’s instructions on practice with the husband. By the third time, she managed to do it correctly.
Lao Zhang got very emotional. “She really hasn’t performed anything like this for a very long time.”
Later on, they gave Liu hand-made walnut bracelets as a present—”for good luck.”
The Sperm Donor Who Remembered Her
On the occasion of a sperm donation drive at the hospital, Liu’s husband said with a grin, “Do you really want me to donate?”
Liu responded sarcastically. “If only. They only take people with college degrees.”
The day after, a shy student named Xiao Gao signed up. He was asking strange questions:
- “Do you use a sperm-donating machine?” (No.)
- “Are you watching porn while you do it?” (No… just instructional videos featuring male doctors from the hospital.)
- “Can I really use donation money to buy a house?” (False. The maximum payout is $750.)
After that, as he was leaving, Xiao Gao said, “You bandaged my head at the orphanage in 2011.”
Liu was shocked.
The skinny boy who had climbed a fence and cut his forehead—now a grown man who still remembers her kindness.
Why Liu Yun Keeps Going
Liu had been in the urology department for 10 years and had to endure all the jokes, awkward glances, and at least once, a rude comment from an embarrassed patient.
However, these moments were what made it all worthwhile—like a love tattoo, a broken family healing, and a kid who never forgot her.
Her work, eventually?
She was not only mending bodies, but she was also mending hearts.
